Ready to Wrestle?

Welcome to the Triangle South Wrestling Club

The Triangle South Wrestling Club provides a safe space for boys & girls to be introduced to the sport of wrestling and the opportunity to develop and excel. We aim to serve the youth in the 4 county areas south of the RDU metro communities (southern Wake, Harnett, Lee and Johnston). Through teaching the fundamentals of the sport, our coaches will also instill lifelong skills and model character traits- like hard work and perseverance, self-discipline, teamwork and cooperation, scholarship and sportsmanship, confidence, time management, and problem-solving skills. Our coaches have deep roots in the area. We are local wrestling enthusiasts who want to share our experience & expertise and are dedicated to making the southern Triangle area a wrestling hub- from developing young athletes to hosting and promoting beginner to elite level events, growing the sport in all directions.

Spring Freestyle / Greco Roman Wrestling Training

TSW

We believe wrestling is wrestling, regardless of style. Mat time and experience are the best ways to learn the sport. We know a detailed focus on fundamental skills and intense drills, along with realistic situational and strategic awareness translates to success in all styles of wrestling. A typical training session will review the basic rules of international styles (Freestyle & Greco-Roman) and how they differ from folkstyle.  We will teach and drill at least one FS and GR technique and relate how it can be used effectively in folkstyle. Our coaching staff all have competitive experience at the collegiate level and in all styles and believe we all continue to learn and hone our skills, on and off the mat.

FAQs About wrestling and TSWC

Yes. There are several studies showing wrestling is safer than many common sports such as football, gymnastics, ice hockey, and even basketball. Although a close-contact sport, the most important findings in these studies were wrestling’s low percentage of serious, permanent, and life-threatening injuries compared to other sports.

Wrestling is a contact sport and injuries will occur. As would be expected, wrestling has more injuries than tennis and swimming, but most wrestling injuries are minor, consisting of sprains and strains. Wrestling has fewer serious injuries than football, basketball, or ice hockey. There is a lesser chance of getting seriously hurt when wrestling than when riding a car, skateboarding, or riding a dirt bike. – USA Wrestling

Here are some factors that contribute to wrestling’s high safety record:

  • Ratio of officials to athletes (1:2)
  • Competitors are matched by age and weight classes
  • Development of strength and flexibility generally prevent injuries, especially during competition
  • Rules, regulations, and certified officials; trainers on site at sanctioned competitions

With that being said, there are inherent risks to participation in any sport.

The name Triangle South Wrestling Club is new, but the local NC roots of the coaches run deep. We have all been successful wrestlers, at various levels, and have a passion for wrestling and a desire to share it with others. With close to 100 years of competitive and coaching experience on staff, TSWC has much to offer young athletes. All TSWC coaches are USA Wrestling Copper or Bronze certified and Safe Sport background checked.

We generally say no one below kindergarten, but this really depends on the maturity of each individual child. In many areas, kids get started around 7-8 years old. As long as they are able to follow instructions/directions and can safely participate, they are welcome to join!

Yes, you can for a small fee. We understand that this sport isn’t for everyone and we offer a 2-day trial for the Beginner/Intermediate practices for only $40.

NOT at ALL!!! Anyone can wrestle. Girl’s wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the country right now and we love that girls can now be introduced to all that our great sport has to offer. We have a girls coach and offer a specific Ladies Night program for Advanced/Elite Lady Warriors!

Wrestling requires very little special equipment to participate:

  • Wrestling shoes (no street shoes or bare feet; we do not have “loaners”)
  • Headgear (optional at practice, but required at most Folkstyle events)

For practice, athletes need to wear a clean T-shirt and shorts/sweats without any zippers or fasteners. For competitions, many times a singlet (uniform) may be required.

Generally, any child with less than 2 years of wrestling experience should be enrolled in the Beginner/Intermediate program. The Advanced/Elite program is designed for experienced wrestlers with at least 2 years of experience. Because of the necessity of matching up athletes based on weight and age, parents and coaches may need to have a conversation about alternate placement- if needed.

USA Wrestling’s Athlete Developmental Model - competing in the sport too early can be detrimental to a wrestler’s longevity in the sport. We do not require any of our youth wrestlers compete in tournaments. We believe the ideal age to start competing is between 10 and 12 years of age. We believe that a kid should compete when he or she is psychologically and physically ready. This can be determined on an individual basis by the wrestler, parents, and coaches.

Wrestlers in the Beginner/Intermediate program, when ready, will compete at local events, including Rookie tournaments, usually within 2 hours travel distance, culminating in a state-wide tournament at the conclusion of each season (Fall/Winter and Spring). Advance/Elite program wrestlers will be encouraged to compete in more selective local and regional and state-wide events, with some out-of-state travel necessary.

Monthly memberships will begin and automatically renew on the day of the month you make your initial membership purchase. Club memberships can be canceled or paused starting on the renewal date.

That is a quickly becoming outdated, and we do not encourage the ‘practice’. We want young athletes to get bigger, faster, and stronger- more physically fit AND happy. A stigma still persists around the sport from how weight management was handled in the past. The days of running in plastic suits and dehydrating yourself are long gone.
